Driving Test

1st Gear = PREPARATION

Your driving instructor will give you a FREE copy of the highway code on your first lesson and recommend other training aids to help you understand the complexities of driving on today's roads.

2nd gear = THEORY AND HAZARD PERCEPTION

First of all you have to pass the theory and hazard perception test before you can take the practical test. You need to be in possession of a current provisional driving licence. You can either book on-line on the DSA website or call 0300 2001122. The test is in two parts: first there are 50 questions, you must get 43 correct to pass this section. Following a break you take the L-plateshazard perception element, this section involves viewing 14 video clips and trying to spot the "hazard". View the clips carefully as one clip contains two hazards! You can score up to 5 points for each hazard and you must score 44 or higher. You must pass both separate elements to archive a pass overall.

3rd gear = THE PRACTICAL TEST

On the day the examiner will check your licence and conduct an eyesight check. You will then be asked two of the "show me tell me" questions. Next you will demonstrate your driving ability for 40 mins. In this time you will conduct two manoeuvres from a turn in the road, reverse parking or reversing round a corner, you may be asked to perform an emergency stop. To pass you need to make no more than 15 minor driving faults with no serious or dangerous faults.

4th gear = THE PASS CERTIFICATE

After completing your drive satisfactorily the examiner will take your provisional licence away and arrange for a full one to be sent to you (this usually takes about 2 weeks). He will give you a certificate so that you can drive on all roads, including motorways, by yourself.
